CODING WITH KIDS: LAST CHANCE!!

Hello Zilker Parents,

Just wanted to let you all know that this is your last chance to register for our Coding with Kids Game Development class. We still need a few more students to make it run and need your help!! This is a very project based, hands on program that will give your child a solid foundation in computer programming and will better prepare them for the future!

Do you play games and wonder how they are created? Would you like to build your own computer programs? Come learn how at the Coding with Kids Academy! In this fun after-school class, you will be introduced to the core concepts of computer programming, including loops, conditionals and variables. Using the Scratch development environment, you will learn how to create your own programs, such as simple games, animations, and interactive stories. With new projects each session, you will be able to express your creativity and advance as a coder! Our progressive curriculum will allow you to move to the next level after just 1-2 sessions.

Play-Well TEKnologies is coming to Zilker Elementary for LEGO Engineering (grades K-2)!

Ratchet up your imagination with tens of thousands of LEGO® parts! Build engineer-designed projects such as: Fire Trucks, Space Stations, Tugboats, and the Eiffel Tower. Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Zilker’s Essentials Drive

In light of the devastation that occurred from Hurricane Harvey, Zilker is having an “Essentials” Drive to help the families who have suffered so much loss. The items listed below are those that are needed immediately to help families displaced by flooding. Collection begins on Tuesday, September 5th and will end on September 20th. Please drop off donations to the bins located around the school (main office, outside of Ms. Vreeland’s office, Ms. Peter’s room (5th), Ms. Devore’s (4th) and Ms. Booth’s (3rd). All donations will be sent to the Central Texas Food Bank.

Zilker is a community that cares, and more than ever, we want to help these families in need. Thank you so much for anything you are able to donate.

Jump start your child’s STEAM education with Coding with Kids’ Little Coders class! Students will develop their computational thinking skills and build their own creative programs. Our curriculum combines a blend of fun activities – both “on-screen” and “off-screen” – to keep students engaged and excited about coding. This class will give students a strong foundation on coding basics, such as loops and conditionals, that can be built upon in our other classes. Kids will be introduced to these programming fundamentals in a variety of ways appropriate for this age group, from coding puzzles and board games to hands-on programming using online drag-and-drop tools, such as Scratch (scratch.mit.edu).

Young Rembrandts Afterschool Drawing Class – Enroll Today!

Back to school is in full swing as Young Rembrandts presents a bountiful selection of drawings that introduces our students to the fascinating world of color, pattern, and design. We’ll explore color use and composition in our dinosaur and monster drawings. In keeping with the season, we’ll create a stylized fall leaves drawing, and then we’ll examine cultural themes by drawing Kawaii-inspired art. Let your child release their inner chef! Students will prepare and eat healthy global inspired recipes all while learning to cook in a fun, engaging and real world way! Our chefs will teach kitchen skills associated with our weekly recipes, along with cooking terminology, new foods, and fun nutrition facts. We will practice measurements, use a wide array of cooking utensils, while always preparing the freshest ingredients! Full recipes will be created each class with our AWESOME master chef Sticky Fingers Cooking instructors. Our on-line recipe collection is included as well for each chef for future family cooking fun!

Film Kids – An After-School Filmmaking Club!

If you’re a 4th or 5th grader who likes making movies then join Film Kids, an after-school club that meets on Wednesdays from 3:00 to 4:45 and starts on September 13th. We pitch, plan, film and act in original movies to show in a film festival at the end of each semester. Snacks and equipment are provided and everyone gets a DVD of their work.
