Season Of Giving – Can You Help A Zilker Family?

Dear Families and Staff,

Together, in partnership with The Grove church, Zilker Elementary will have A Season of Giving bulletin board displayed next to the office. This bulletin board will help families in the community that are in need of assistance during the holiday season.

There are still requests that have not been filled.  If you can help a Zilker family, please stop by the bulletin board, gifts are due this Friday 12/12.

Here’s how it works:

1. If you would like to participate in the Season of Giving, take a winter shape (star, tree, gingerbread) off of the bulletin board. The Season of Giving bulletin board is located to the right of the main office.
2. Each shape on the bulletin board represents one wish list item, or one gift for a child or adult. The star will have the family number, age, gender, and item.
3. If you would like to purchase 1 gift for a child, take 1 shape. 3 gifts? Take 3 shapes… etc.
4. Once you take the shape(s) off the board, write your name on the clipboard next to the corresponding shape number(s).
5. Then, buy and wrap the purchased item(s) and secure the winter shape on the outside of the wrapped item.
6. Bring the wrapped gifts to Mrs. Vreeland’s room by Friday, Dec. 12th.
7. If you have any questions or if you would like a shape to be sent home with your child because you can’t make it to Zilker, please do not hesitate to contact Elizabeth Vreeland, the school counselor.

Thank you so much for helping children in the community!

Custodian Appreciation Day!

October 2nd is Custodian Appreciation Day at Zilker Elementary!!  A big thank you to the wonderful team at Zilker who do so much to make Zilker a great place for kids! Thanks to Ms Jia, Fernando, Emilio & Arthur for all that they do!

Greetings from your new assistant principal!

Dear Zilker Families and Friends,
After years of teaching so many wonderful students here at Zilker, I am delighted that I have the opportunity to serve in a new role as Zilker’s assistant principal! We have such a vibrant and creative campus here on Bluebonnet Lane, and I am looking forward to working hard in this new capacity to serve all of our students, teachers, and families in our educational mission.

We have such caring, hardworking teachers and staff here, who are bolstered by great neighborhood supporters and families like yours. My own children come here to learn, grow, and play. They’re big fans of Zilker, too. We’re lucky to be part of this community, and I’ll continue to work side-by-side with you to cultivate the creativity and excellence so often on display here.

Please feel welcome to visit with me anytime to share your curiosities, concerns, and appreciations as the school year unfolds. I am excited to work together as we celebrate our students’ current achievements and nurture future successes.

Warmest regards,
Patrick Aziz

A Letter From Mr. Hill

Dear Zilker Elementary Families,

This is Brian Hill, your assistant principal. I am writing to let you know about some changes that will be happening this coming semester. I want to let you know that I will not be returning to Zilker Elementary in the spring of 2014. I have been asked to help out at Garcia Middle School in East Austin as there is a vacancy in one of their assistant principal positions. I want you to know that this wasn’t a position I sought out, it is not a promotion, and it is only for the spring semester since Garcia will be transformed into a single gender school in the fall of 2014. I have asked that my position at Zilker Elementary be left open for the fall of 2014 so that I may return after helping out at Garcia Middle School. The plan is to return after my duties there are complete on June 17th.

If you don’t know much about Garcia Middle School, it is a campus located in East Austin and is part of the LBJ High School vertical team. The school has been struggling for a while academically and has many needs, but the students and families are amazing, just like y’all. I was a teacher at Volma Overton Elementary, a school that feeds into Garcia Middle School, before coming to Zilker Elementary, so I have a relationship with many of the students currently enrolled at Garcia Middle School. I think that has a lot to do with why I was asked to help finish the year there. While I am sad that I will not be at Zilker Elementary in the spring, I know that when duty calls to help a campus and students in need in AISD, I need to answer that call. We represent not just one campus, but AISD as a whole. I am confident that the two principals filling in for me this spring will be wonderful and their experience and expertise will be greatly appreciated here at Zilker Elementary.

I want to thank you for all of the love and support you have shown me this past year and a half. Your students are amazing and I have enjoyed working with them. The things I have learned here at Zilker Elementary under Mr. Thomson’s leadership will help me to better serve the students at Garcia Middle School as they finish out the year there. I look forward to seeing y’all at afterschool events that I am able to get over here for in the spring, and seeing y’all again in the fall of 2014. If you have any questions or just want to say hello, you can still reach me at Have a great Winter Break.
