Pre-K and Kindergarten Playdate-> Saturday, August 19th @ 9am

Hello Pre-K and Kindergarten parents!

We know first day jitters can be a little overwhelming for our kids, especially when they might not know anyone in their classroom and/or school.  Please join us on Saturday, August 19th from 9am-11am at the Zilker Playground (near the library) to meet your fellow classmates.  This is a great opportunity to meet Zilker families in a relaxing setting.  All kids/grades welcome to attend as well.

School Clean Up -> Thursday, August 17th @ 9am

Mark your calendars for school clean up this Thursday, August 17th @ 9am!  We will meet at Jabo’s Garden, so please bring sunscreen, hats, water and adult/kid gloves to help get our school presentable for the first day of school!  See you there!

10 Reasons To Join The PTA

Dozens of studies have shown that when parents get involved at school, children perform better. One of the easiest ways to get involved at Zilker is by joining our Parent Teacher Association. Here are 10 reasons why you should join:

#1: Your child benefits. When parents get connected to the school, children get better grades, do better on tests, and have fewer discipline problems. When you build a relationship with your child’s teachers, principal, and office staff, it is far easier to communicate about any problems (or victories) that occur throughout the year.

#2: You will be in the know. PTA members know what’s happening with the school, who’s involved, and usually plans many of the events.

#3: You’ll tap into a network. PTA functions are opportunities to meet other parents and teachers, to build rapport and discuss issues that are on your mind. You can share ideas, concerns, and experiences to make the school year better for everyone.

#4: You can be part of the solution. By getting involved at Zilker you can help make positive changes. Our PTA plays an important role in fundraising to provide building improvements, curriculum-based programs, and social events.

#5: You can meet other parents. The common bond we share is that we care about creating the best possible educational experience at Zilker for our kids. We are neighbors and peers and as a result, many friendships are forged via this connection.

#6: Your child will feel a sense of pride. Being part of our PTA will, in most cases, make your kids proud of you. They may not admit it, but they will feel proud that their parents are involved in improving the school’s well-being.

#7: You can have fun while doing good. You will be hanging out with a great bunch of people whose common goal is to create the best school experience for our kids. Help plan fun events, socials and get-togethers the whole family can attend.

#8: It’s flexible. Not a lot of time? There are a variety of small ways parents can help and be involved. It only takes a little commitment to make a big difference.

#9: You can share your skills. Every parent has a skill set that they can bring to the PTA and Zilker, whether it’s from your career, hobbies or just commitment of time. Your child will beam, knowing you’re helping out.

#10: You can show that you care. By becoming a member of our PTA, you’ll be a role model and demonstrate to your child the importance you place on their education as well as on being involved in their world.

Please join the PTA this year and help make Zilker an even greater place for kids!  Click here to sign up:

ZPTA Preliminary Budget Update

Thank you to those who could attend the May 16th PTA meeting.  It is evident that we are a passionate group that wants the most for our kids. After the dust settled, I was able to meet with the Austin Council of PTAs that works directly with TXPTA.   We’ve had several conversations and I met face to face with their president and parliamentarian.  After my meetings with them, I’d like to announce to you that the votes regarding the preliminary budget passed 19 Yes to 18 no.  It was discovered that 3 votes were cast by  proxy.   According to Article IX, Section 4 of the TXPTA bylaws: “There shall be no proxy voting.” Therefore, this means that the  budget was approved by a simple majority vote.

This preliminary budget as presented provides for $15k for an Instructional Specialist, $5k for technology, $10k for Jabo’s Garden and $4k for Futura/Spanish for PreK & Kindergarten.   Please keep in mind that this budget is fluid and will continue to evolve.  As a PTA, we will be looking to the guidance of our next principal to continue supporting the school’s needs.
From this meeting, we heard many voices and the want for a Spanish program!  It’s our task to carry on the dialogue with the administration to determine how to continue with a Spanish and/or multi-cultural program at Zilker. And, though it wasn’t communicated clearly, the PTA board would still like to see some sort of program continue.  As we said in the meeting, we will work with the incoming administration in the upcoming school year to advocate for a program that works for both teachers and students.  There are many example of what that might look like and we’d like to work with all interested to help determine what those goals are inconjuction with the vision of our school leadership.    I’m eager to see champions arise for a multi-cultural or language program amongst our teachers, parents and administration.
We know diversity is important in our community, and we know as a PTA, we are supplementing what the district provides. Please don’t hesitate to contact me or Vera Muniz to set up a time to discuss.
Thank you again for your time!

Welcome Zilker’s New Principal!

Zilker’s Campus Advisory Council is excited to announce that our new principal will be introduced to the campus on Tuesday, May 23rd!   There will be an assembly for all students and any parents who want to attend at 8:15am in the cafeteria. Representatives from AISD will be there to make a formal introduction. He/she will then attend Kinder Camp in the library. A second, less formal, introduction will take place that evening at 6pm in the cafeteria.  We hope that you will be able to attend one or both meetings to give our new leader a very warm, Zilker welcome!
